Who Founded Unacademy? Meet the Team Behind India’s EdTech Platform

    By james kAugust 18, 2026

Unacademy, one of India’s most prominent edtech platforms, was founded in 2015 by Gaurav Munjal, Roman Saini, and Hemesh Singh, a founding team whose combined backgrounds in content creation, competitive exam success, and technology helped shape a platform that would go on to serve millions of students preparing for various competitive examinations across India.

The platform’s origins trace back even earlier, to a YouTube channel that Gaurav Munjal started in 2010, well before Unacademy formally existed as a company. This early channel focused on creating educational content, and its growing audience and engagement provided both validation of genuine demand for accessible, free educational content and practical experience in content creation that would directly inform the platform Munjal and his co-founders would eventually build together.

Roman Saini brought a particularly distinctive background to the founding team, having cleared the Union Public Service Commission civil services examination, one of India’s most competitive and demanding examinations, at the notably young age of 22, subsequently serving briefly as an Indian Administrative Service officer before leaving that career path to co-found Unacademy. This personal experience with India’s competitive examination system gave Saini genuine, firsthand insight into the challenges and preparation needs of the platform’s core target audience.

Hemesh Singh, the third co-founder, brought the technology expertise essential to building and scaling Unacademy’s underlying platform, having worked in engineering and technology roles prior to co-founding the company. Singh’s technical background complemented Munjal’s content and audience-building experience and Saini’s subject matter and exam-preparation credibility, giving the founding team a genuinely well-rounded combination of skills spanning content, credibility, and technology.

Unacademy officially transitioned from Munjal’s YouTube channel into a formal company in 2015, initially focused on providing free educational video content before evolving its business model over subsequent years to include paid subscription offerings, live classes, and a broader marketplace connecting students with educators across a wide range of subjects and competitive examination categories, extending well beyond its original civil services exam preparation focus.

The platform’s growth was significantly accelerated by India’s broader smartphone and internet adoption during the mid-to-late 2010s, which dramatically expanded the potential addressable audience for online educational content, particularly among students in smaller Indian cities and towns who had historically faced more limited access to quality exam preparation resources compared to students in major metropolitan areas.

Unacademy’s educator marketplace model, allowing subject matter experts and experienced teachers to create and monetize their own courses and live classes on the platform, became a defining feature of its business approach, helping the company scale content breadth considerably faster than would have been possible relying solely on content produced directly by the founding team or a small internal staff of educators.

The company’s growth trajectory included substantial venture capital investment as it scaled into one of India’s most valuable edtech companies during the sector’s broader boom, particularly accelerated during the period when increased online learning adoption drove significant growth for many educational technology platforms across the country and internationally.

The founding story of Unacademy reflects a pattern increasingly common among successful modern startups: a founder’s personal content creation efforts on an existing platform like YouTube serving as genuine market validation and an organic audience-building foundation, subsequently formalized into a dedicated company once the underlying opportunity and audience demand had been clearly demonstrated through that earlier, more organic content-building phase.

This pattern of starting on an existing platform before formalizing into a dedicated company has since become considerably more common across India’s broader creator and edtech landscape, with Unacademy’s own trajectory frequently cited as an early, influential example of how a genuinely engaged online audience, built gradually through free content, can serve as the foundation for a substantial venture-backed business once that underlying demand has been clearly and organically demonstrated.
